Iranian Navy Participates in Joint Maritime Exercise in India
The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium organized the first edition of the IONS maritime exercise (IMEX 2022) in Indian waters near Goa.
Iranian naval forces aboard the local destroyer “Dena” took part in the joint exercise.
Nine naval vessels from five ION member states and 16 observers from 11 other members are said to have taken part in the joint exercise.
According to Captain Farhad Fattahi, Commander of the Iranian Flotilla, IMEX 2022 will take place in two phases onshore and offshore, the latter involving specialized naval operations such as rescue and relief missions.
The Iranian navy participated in the joint exercise for humanitarian purposes to offer training cooperation and share maritime and naval experiences, he added.
To design the broad lines of the exercise, a planning conference was held in Mumbai, India on March 2 with the participation of marines from ION members.
The onshore phase of IMEX 2022 took place in the Indian port of Mormugao from March 25-27, while the offshore phase is taking place in the Arabian Sea.
The IONS is a voluntary initiative that aims to increase maritime cooperation among the navies of coastal states in the Indian Ocean region by providing an open and inclusive forum to discuss regionally relevant maritime issues.
