Despite the existence of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act in the United States, prejudices still often affect borrowers from ethnic minority backgrounds when purchasing a home, even when they have the same wealth as white purchasers.

These prejudices are subsequently routinely incorporated into machine-learning algorithms used by lenders to organize decision-making, resulting in adverse repercussions for housing equity and perhaps contributing to the growth of the racial wealth gap.

For mortgage lenders, if a model is trained on an unfair dataset – such as one in which a greater percentage of Black applicants were rejected loans than white borrowers with the same income or credit score – the model’s predictions will be affected when applied to real-world scenarios.

For example, if a minority borrower receives a loan after their race is changed to white, the machine model deems that data point to be biased and eliminates it from the dataset.

To combat racism and prejudice in mortgage lending, MIT researchers developed a strategy for removing bias from the data used to train these machine-learning algorithms.

The Journal of Financial Economics study develops a new technique for mortgage lenders that allows for the removal of bias from a dataset with multiple sensitive attributes, such as race and ethnicity, as well as several “sensitive” options for each attribute, such as Black or white, Hispanic or Latino, or non-Hispanic or Latino.

DualFair identifies and corrects for two forms of bias in a mortgage loan dataset: label and selection bias.

On the other hand, selection bias occurs when data are not typical of the greater population — for example, when a dataset contains only people from a single neighbourhood with historically low earnings.

DualFair then reduces label bias by subdividing a dataset into as many subgroups as possible depending on sensitive qualities and alternatives, such as white males who are not Hispanic or Latino, black women who are Hispanic or Latino, and so on.

DualFair then balances the proportion of loan acceptances and rejections in each subgroup to match the median in the original dataset before recombining the subgroups. This is accomplished by duplicating individuals from minority groups and deleting individuals from the majority group, and by balancing the proportion of loan acceptances and rejections in each subgroup to match the median in the original dataset.

DualFair was tested using the publicly accessible Home Mortgage Disclosure Act dataset, which covers 88 percent of all mortgage loans in the United States in 2019 and contains 21 variables such as color, sex, and ethnicity.

The DualFair technique boosted forecast fairness while maintaining a high degree of accuracy across all states, making racial discrimination against minority groups by mortgage lenders more difficult.

Additionally, the researchers employed an established fairness statistic known as the average odds difference. However, this difference can only be used to determine the fairness of a single sensitive property — thus they developed their own fairness metric, dubbed the alternative world index, that takes into account bias from numerous sensitive characteristics and choices as a whole.

They discovered that DualFair boosted predictor fairness in four of the six states while retaining good accuracy.

“Until now, researchers have mostly attempted to categorize biased instances as binary,” Gupta remarked.
